You can’t just give me a furry and expect me to accept it with NO tail.Īnd with the release of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon shortly after, we got one more new form of Lycanroc to use. I guess they took it out to emphasize the “wolf-man” look but. Not that I was looking for one of those muscular werewolf types but it just looks a bit sickly in a not so intended way. My two minor troubles that sadly keep me from loving Midnight are the arms. The toothy grin, the cool hair, and the hunched back for the rather classic werewolf look. Had I designed it, I would’ve pushed the design a bit further to be a little bit more savage looking, but this is good too. And oh YES I’ll definitely take a new Pokemon based on even more of Halloween’s vast bestiary of monsters. It’s all necessary for Midnight’s WEREWOLF theme. But surprisingly they pulled this off quite well. You would’ve thought making a wolf Pokemon anthropomorphic would’ve just been a disaster a Lucario 2, even. It seems odd, just because it could’ve been a +1 on the already fairly small Pokedex number to soften the blow of two tiny generations in a row just that little bit more.Īnyway, Midnight. In Pokemon Moon, Rockruff instead becomes Midnight Lycanroc! Which, these two Pokemon are just different enough from each other that I would’ve made them split-evos/separate species anyway. I got a soft spot for this dumb dog.īut that’s not all the doggo we get today! That was just Lycanroc’s Day form that it turns into in Pokemon Sun. Everybody wins!Įxtra half a point because sure. Wolf fans finally get their lycan Pokemon, and Gamefreak now has an excuse if they really, truly, and fully never want to make another wolf Pokemon ever again, because fans are fairly satisfied with this one. I won’t say no to even a rather plain good dog. Had I been 16 when Lycanroc came out I probably would’ve lost my mind and promptly would’ve made a fursona out of it like Gamefreak probably cynically expects at this point.īut hey, it’s competently designed. It’s, again, just a rock dog.īut y'know, for something that WAS on a Pokemon wishlist but I eventually grew out of, I’m kinda glad it happened anyway. And I guess Lycanroc kinda reflects that in the sense that it’s a pretty straightforward design was no crazy fun or amazing twist to it. Among canid creatures, wolves feel like some of the most creatively restricting bases for a dog monster you could have. For how much demand there was for a wolf Pokemon, the appeal to me wore off about the instant I got past my “teenage closet furry” stage. It SOMEHOW took 7 generations to finally get an undeniable wolf Pokemon. A cute rock dog, but little more than that. It has stones in its “collar” but that’s about it. I wouldn’t know what about Rockruff warrants the Rock typing anyways. It IS Rock type so perhaps it is intentional but, who knows. But I suppose to make up for it we instead got a couple of extinct Pokemon in Decidueye and now Rockruff, which seems to be based on the Hawaiian Poi dog. We sadly don’t have any Fossil Pokemon this time around, which seems like an odd omission to me since it’s a trend within Pokemon that hardly has a real limit on what animals you could represent with it, there being plenty of extinct species to pick from. Our canid this time around is an adorable little puppy of sorts, the Rock-type Rockruff.
